HP P410 RAID Installed on the WRONG PC  , or even NON HP  PC's?       
                This HP card was never sold for non HP Proliant Server duty ever.   See battery hacking.

Nothing I am doing here or saying applies to any HP production systems of any kind, it is only for Private servers, and using the wrong base system, in this topic, a non Proliant base systems ,etc. 
HP did not sell this card  as generic RAID kits ever.  (Used spares are seen in vast quantities now , at near free prices, even 1/3th the price of any near same era and  quality LSI (3ware card, or IBM or DELL) even a whopping $8 (got 2 at that price)
To be sure it does work great in 2 of my Alien PC's,  just the F8 key is dead, and nothing else ! (and I discovered why)
The poor  P410 can no longer talk to Ilo3 processor ,now, because that is missing ,nor can it talk to the main HP mobo BIOS, it too is missing , nor can it use  those missing, LED's on the missing backplanes! (note 3 missings)
But undeterred from facts (eek) we move on, to do the Impossible.

Asking HP to help you now, this card, this method,  makes you seem the odd duck (we are) after all HP told you it only works right in our HPE class Servers ! ( a hard cold fact
The cure is easy:
The  free HP APPlication ,called SSA will run,  Smart Storage Administrator,   or the older 2015 program called ACU works here. and best of all !  (get it from a boot CD and for the desktop APP) {Application program = APP}
Step 1 is always:
The 410 cards ROM (firmware) must be flashed  to gain over >2TB support ! and to get the new free, features like Raid-6 and above modes and more., that used to take a costly license to get. (nice) 
The CACHE  256MB and up better (and battery(cap) and charged) must be there, or  most useful features will be dead.  (512MB and 1GB are far better choices) Do not skip having CACHE feature there.
Do not read all the below, just know that with iLO3 dead (missing) , so will be the keyboard  will be dead, when you hammer that F8 key, so the answer is the SSA bood CD, or APP

RAID testing my  P410 card
,  with 1GB FBWC CACHE.  (flash back rated) With Super cap dongle. (I call it an energy pack but must match the Cache card you have !)

In both cases let the battery or CAP charge fully (2hours) before doing things ! The LED on the dongle thing tells you when it's ready) so wait for it...........

The P410 is one of the best, Raid controllers ever made (G7 server era)!  Sure a top level 3ware MegaRaid is good too. ( Have 2 here working).
410, tells you when drives are in early failure! "that smart part does that" You can add drives, while in production! (bigger arrays faster)
The 410 warns warns you during or even before, a drive failure (there is  huge list of drive s.m.a.r.t data it watches full time and then warns you when any of those are wrong !) It even turns on LED's for that.
One LED on the card, and 2 on the HDD black plain if fitted, but not here.
You can move older drives from other HP servers to newer and even mix them up wrong, and it unscrambles this  mess.
Sorry you can not move a 3WARE/LSI/Dell/IBM/Adaptec formatted(meta data) RAID drives and expect it to work as is! (not dban erased) on any HP controller,  , sorry! It is smart, not GOD LIKE.

The P410 card was designed only for  HP servers not for any non HP systems, or any home PCs or even the below.
The F8 key even fails on my WM4600 HP enterprise workstation. (but runs perfectly in all other ways)
That aside my setup works 100% (F8 dead and to me is a useless feature)
Learn how to make your ALIEN mobo happier with your Raid card first.  Here is my list (extensive) (mobo is short for MotherBOARD)
The only thing else that will not work is the loss of the   LED Status pin Power cable P11  on the SAS drive, the codes for Seagate are here. (due to a missing backplane)

Squawk #1:
"F8 is missing or dead ! why?"  (all my LSI cards (3ware) all respond in any PC made (alt +3) but is expected !
Before doing this add a small boxer fan near the heat sink, most PC do not flow air here and the heat sink WILL overheat.
The F8 key needs a working keyboard during the P410 boot and  (or even p400) initialization scan,  it alway scans here even on and alien PC, to find the up to 24 attached drives, some can be slow to respond so takes time about 2 minutes time.
Some card scan up to 127 drives (tries)
The below Smart Array if missing means 2 things, (The MAIN BIOS has ROM extensions turned off or the silly thing puts up logos or other bull  graphics there just hiding the P410 scans.)
During  scan the F8 key hammered by me, it  will set the entry point in the the P410 ROM monitor (interactive) but will not on Alien PCs due to the missing iLo brain.  (yes, on real HP's severs, the  ilo and the 410 work as a team!)

The F8 key fails in my HP XW4600 and my new ASUS PC the F8 key is dead, but the card works perfectly otherwise.  (using ALC or SSA app)
This is because the code running see above in slot 0 , does not support any USB keyboards, (I tested the PS/2  keyboard and it too is DEAD) "initializing ******"
There are only 2 cures:
  1. Dont use the RAID to boot, or use the ACU boot CD rom setups , provided free at HP and boot to it and set up all arrays there. including any boot array,  (warning some older cards only can boot from the first LUN.) RTM
  2. Or boot to local SATA drive and not use the array for data  only.  Then when that boots run old ACU or SSA (better and newer) and set up your new arrays.
  THE HP ACU program boots from CD too, and can be loaded to windows. as can the newer and far better SSA.
Windows 7 up or Server 2008 up sees the card (pre install and post install) and can access it with no problems at all.
 Setup right means using the SSA to do create media (puts meta data there (HP) and sets to a LUN and then optionally boot to a LUN.

My tests all failed.  (these are the top causes of ROMS to fail on all PCs and reported in 100s of forum) My compendium.
Here is my hit list for only F8 failures, at boot. (no main BIOS has them all) F8 can can even fail on a real server. (even a shorted HDD or shorted SFF cables can make it go  dead, so pull the RAID cable and reboot)

Power on and hammer the F8 key for sure when you see smart array p410  text. as seen above,  my F8 is dead in my workstationm but never in my Proliant real. (usb keyboard and PS2 keyboard tested)
  1. Try the p410 in all PCI-express slots x8 and above if the slot0 message above  fails to show up. (and turn them on first seen below at the end of my document , eg slot 4 on)
  2. In the MAIN BIOS PC, Turn off UEFI 
  3. Turn off SAFE boot
  4. Turn off Fast Boot. ( turn on FULL BOOT)
  5. Turn off PCE-NIC boot .
  6. Turn on legacy boot.
  7. Turn off ( No Text prompts boots)  "this forces  verbos  boots"
  8. Turn off BIOS LOGO graphics  (you want text only boot messages !)
  9. Turn on long boot , long boot runs the long memory, test (esc key aborts , this live memory scan if it bugs you now) turn this off later, when sure it's not hiding text.
  10. Some systems have a   ROM boot order there,  (try P410 first or last) Mine can boot all ROM cards in all slots in the order I choose (XW4600)
  11. Turn off onboard SATA (or onboard RAID) if you can,just to see if F8 works right now.   (I tried this both ways on many PC and was no cure.)
  12. Some PC have boot order menu delays so set it to 10 seconds, so you can see the P410  load initialize, with this text mode, Initializing,,airplane propeller ***** texts spinner. the spinner is for 24 deep drive scans.
  13. At this time Hit F8 (be it known it never prompts you for the "F8") ( I found out the keyboard goes DEAD, during the Init scan P410!    HARK, THE TRUTH BE KNOWN !
  14. BINGO ! (I found the caps lock key goes dead during the scan, bingo, you dirty dog ROM) and num lock dead and pause key dead, but wakes up just after the P410 stops scanning.  (oops too late NOW)
  15. Some have Boot devices,  listed, there, and have an enable a   dis-able in each one , not just order selections. Do you see P410 shown there?, or by some generic odd terms  like (Rom boot 1)? bingo. !
  16. The BOOT ROM's on some PC have  enable/disable for each on, turn them all on but not PXE-NIC. (if you turn the ROM off in your P410 socket, the ROM never loads or scans or initializes at all. (born  dead) but may work in windows ok.
  17. Turn off all onboard things you don't need, like LPT port, RS232, SOUND, and more. (the more you kill the more memory that can be free'd up in BIOS.
  18. One guy saw the F8 go dead and found one SAS cable was shorted, causing that , so unplug those cables, at card SFF jack, and see if F8 wakes up?. (the wiki on SAS spec, states no shorts allowed to the VPS pins! allowed on this cable )
  19. Do I need to say the Captain Obvious here,  test the card in a real HP server first, and to test one drive at  time; as drives can short out, and test the drives on other PC(a test system using any HBA card).
  20. There are  lots of  cables types, forward /reverse and even direct SATA cables (I use this to Sata drives) Only the correct good cables work.) Avoid Reverse cables, unless sure you need it. (REV , means a reverse SPLIT cable... mostly useless.)
  21. Did F8 key wakeup the P410  BINGO,  (mine fails even after all things here are tried) But now I know why on a real server ,iLo3 watches the keyboard and feeds the F8 data to the RAID if pressed. (dang me)  but SSA works so don't care a lick. this.

HP mobo BIOS,  Select Power-on Logo , disable.
Gigabyte B85 fix,  really?, this is #1 above! (for sure the UEFI is no good, try all legacy then OFF)  One will show F8 smart array at boot.
UEFI can be a huge pain in the backside.  Turn it off.  UEFI = unlimited,engine (raid) failure , initiator? LOL?
If running a P420 card you can in fact flip the HBA bit, but it will never do both at the same time.  (not RAID and HBA at the same time)
But none the less a great trouble shooting tool that feature. (I have a HBA that I use to test old SAS drives, much more easy)  < my LSI-9211 (hba flashed)

If you got F8 to work here are the steps. (my Alien PC never will)
Plug in a HDD, then use create array or plug in 2 and create RAID 1 +0
The F8 steps are here,  better is SSA app. (cd or on windows 10 or Winserver 2012,)
The Drive will never ever boot unless you set the new array to do so, as a LUN , logical array. (lacking this , it will NEVER BOOT here)  Create array the set it to boot and then windows install disk see it, well not XP.sigh.
Then install your  OS, it finds the LUN drive, and then installs your OS.  (ORCA is HP jargon for, Option ROM Configuration for Arrays.

More F8 steps. 

Here is a list  of why cards (raid) can not be found or your sas/sata drives attached do not show up.
First read the manual on the P410, on how autoarray configure features works and other auto features (complex !), yes it can detect a pure empty virgin drive and NOT !
  • The P410 card in the wrong express slot X8 or X16 . (some cheap consumer PCs have this queer x8 slot that only x4 channels are active, what junk that is.) The GOAL is the RED words above on your screen . "Smart Array"
  • The mobo has extension rom's turned off globally or by slot as seen on my xw4600 , by slot is a feature, for example even my PXE-NIC rom is turned off.
  • The HDD missing in above attached Physicals drives. Have many causes, bad cables, no power to the drive, bad drive, and formatted with an ALIEN format,  (lots possible in the alien catagoy.)
  • A drive formatted (means raid meta data) on say LSI/DELL/IBM/  controller may not show up.
  • A drive formatted to Apple computers may not show up.  in all cases the cure is erase the drive with Dban 1.07  . Using any HBA card connected to the drive,  SATA ports on the mobo will not erase any SAS drive.
  • Know that SATA is a subset protocol of SAS controllers but never the reverse. (means SAS drives connect to SATA ports , gets you dead drives.
  • The card RAID has a heat sink , if you dont keep it cool it will overheat fast, in 5 minutes fast. I think it shuts down hot, but I am too chicken $$$ to test that theory.  So if  all your drives fail to show up, look here first.
End F8 waste of time, on to better things. This below sections are the correct ways to set up any RAID card by HP. Using ACU or the better SSA.

SSA program application program , is  BEST , nothing works better or faster or has more features.. (SSA is an ACU upgrade)
SSA runs 3 ways: Booted to  a SSA CD disk or to any USB stick, or loaded into say windows 10 as an application program)
The worse case,is wanting to install say Win SERV 2012r2 and wanting to load that OS on to say a 2 disk array, first (latter adding a data array for well anything)
Lets say F8 is dead for the reasons stated above.
I then Run SSA ,booted from CD, (costs you cost of  CD blank CD-R)
  1. You then use the Below screens to create say a 2 drive array for the OS (r2)  Create them , make a  LUN drive , and set the LUN, as the boot drive, now.
  2. Load your OS next. To that  LUN array -1,  (if running windows 7  and newer,  the OS  installers all find  the LUN array no problems and lets you install it now.
  3. The OS is now running, after the OS completes its install sessions, so you then install SSA application  to the OS.
  4. Then you see the below again, from the new APP. And add what you want now, even a huge Raid 5, that is very fast.
  5. Tune the CACHE seen below FOR READ/WRITE, RATIO, % per your own needs. (I used 75% Read , for Video service)

You can run SSA (or ACU) and see empty disks or see formatted disks (P410  created) SSA is running below on WiNServer2012 but can run window 10. or from  SSA boot CD. (called off line way)
This is my Proliant G7 (dl380) +P410i. ("i" means imbedded on board , not an express card)
Avoid F8 and use SSA or ACU
SSA, above, Smart Storage Administrator App.  will see 100% new empty, or used fully erased drives, under unassigned. or Physical. 
If you install  1 empty drive to a screen above that has no other drives, it will auto format it, to Raid 0.   (one could do that and then make it boot able in seconds) do this as your first test to learn how all this works.
But you can add a drive, to say my bank of qty 5 ,300GB drives,  and it will expand the array RAID 5.
Do not just put in drives and take them out willy nilly, make sure the controller is  not rebuilding, expanding or the like first. let it finish that job then play more.  Having 1GB Cache speeds this up greatly, so  have that.
Once can put a bank of drives back in out of  order ,it will try hard to unscramble your error. (Using meta data and you being super lucky, always use  sharpe pen and lable them, 1,2,3,4,5,.... Why tempt FATE?

One trick using SSA, is to shut it down (exit the APP) and run it again (if refresh button  fails), and see better updated in formation , like (38% done building Raid 5) leave it alone, do not turn off the system, please.
If the system is not online live (Production) on say the internet , but is off line (no users/customers), set the configurations to max rebuild priority, for faster building of large arrays, and for sure that 1GB CACHE installed (buy the big one, it works far better)
Never run any 410 card or the like kind, lacking at least SSA app. , at your feet, ready to go.
( The p420  card is even more fancy and more bread $ but has HBA mode)
MY STEPS: Xw4600

  1. Install the cards, (both RAID  with the CACHE fitted)
  2. Let the Super CAP. charge up. before doing work real of any kind.
  3. I  flashed the P410, ROM (FW) first thing... v6.64 (B)(1 Oct 2015) This makes over 2TB HDD work and the newer RAID modes, like RAID 6 and more. all for FREE !! No license needed !!!
  4. F8 fails hard and is useless. Just  as well SSA is the better way to go.  (in this case the mobo boots its own SATA SSD, and W10, and does not boot to P410).
  5. I used SSA to create the array and the LUN it and that is done. ( if building 2nd array that boots, do that first and load and OS) I think it works best to install all virgin drives, at once and build the array , all drives at once, (for sure faster )
  6. I copy my videos to the new array, (from my  backup server G7) .
  7. Set up shares, and all is happy. (my MKV video server software is setup and I am on line )

I am now done  building  and all things  work but the F8 mode.
 Below is the BIG  1GB CACHE CARD ! 
This card is totally unlike the old P400 SRAM cards, that use battery.
 This new design is vastly superiour the old.  When the system loses power, the Super Cap (no it is not a BATTERY), runs this card to save all pending write data to flash  memory chip seen here. (SanDisk)
When power is restored the card the pulls the data out FLASH ram and restores it and then the OS completes it's mission  writing new data to the ARRAY.
When explanding arrays this card does AUX duties, it is used to migrate data and the CACHE feature above is disabled until the job is  done. SAA even tells you it's DONE.

The cards are all designed to run a real server, and must have positive air flow,  with a case fan sucking air from outside PC to the card and passing over that very hot heat sink seen below.
Note the holes in the  J-bracket to help the air flow over the heat sink and exit the case. this is NO ACCIDENT this thermal design.
P420 with 512MB onboard cache. This card has  HBA mode ! nice that.

My oldest cache card (uses 15pin battery jack) marked 256MB is 40bit wide, has 3 DDR2 chips SDRAM(with self refresh (wow) and each chip is and array of "8 banks x 8Mbit x16 wide" , so my guess is 48 bits -8 ECC bits, gives you 40bit wide data.
The newer cards with 512MB up are 72 bit wide, or 80 with ECC data side. It's fun to see what is there, with amazing density.
The BBWC battery has 4 NiMh button cells inside, one remove the PCB here easy and solder in any 4.8vdc small NiHh battery pack.  rated as near 650mAh
The left side of this Battery Unit, see AUX LED, that tell you it has power to it.
THe LED marked, BAT, glow when battery is charged, (mine fails to do that (have 2 used ones both fail to charge) I have home NiMh battery charger that  I use with the PCB removed, and the battery is bad tested that way too. (conclusive)
The date code (09/09( Sept 2009  is  hopeless year for year 2017 useage (ugh!) See those 2 gold clips dead center put voltmeter there (DMM) and it get 0v on one and 1.5v on the other battery, so both are shorted now, and expected by me. (24hr test)
If you tickle this point (red arrow) the tiny PCB tips out easy.

Then I  solder the battery wires  to the gold PCB pads, using correct polarity.  Facing the PCB, PLUS is top left PAD (far) (the case has  huge + sticker there ,I am facing it.)
A PIG TAILed  battery can be found on ebay or even walfart, in the home wireless phone sections (landline 4.6v) or electric shaver NiHh not NiCAD..  600 to 700mAh.    (the 2000mAh= seen for TOY race CARs, are too big.)
or use a standarad quad AAA battery pack series version using AAA NiHh cells, only.  4x 700mA/hr  are still only 700mA/hr in series, only the voltage is 4 times more, and perfect for this application and more easy to find off the self. (camera shelf)
Cut the leads strip them and solder them down and this will work.   The holder below is 77cents free ship from China. If ship time is not and issue.  The advangee of AAA if one cell goes bad,  buy 1 cell. cheaper.
The Photo AAA batterys hold a charge 10x longer.(coppertops do!  I know this because I have a camera that proves that.... some older NiHh have huge self draining effects.... not good.)
One more advanage of AAA is you can charged the batteries  off line in camera charger. The below one can put a tie warp end to end and it's secure.

I connect the above to here , cable off first, then tilt out the PCB then solder in the new NiMh battery.  (The whole JOB parts in hand is 15min work max.)  For sure better than buying online 5+ times to find a good BBWC !

Rule 1: RAID, never pull the card P410) lay down with battery attached, ever, in fact unplug the battery first (or 17farad power pack"SuperCap") first.  ALWAYS FIRST or BOOM happens.! (kiss of $500 card super easy)
The connector on the CARD (or P410i chip) is a SFF-8087  it has 36 pins ,24 signals and 12 grounds (it runs balanced transmission lines in COAX and  is not low tech)<< not just simple point to point wires.
That  connector has NO POWER Feeds ! (that means you must add power to each drive, or if a backplane, power to it your self) "more captain obvious sorry"

There are 2 ways and 2 technologies here,  Direct connect to a drive for say 4 drives, and then there is the direct connecton to a backplane of many kinds, the cables are not all the  same and a big pain if you do not pay attention to what you bought.
Here is my Forward  8087 cable direct  to four SATA only drives,.(aka splitters)

Here is my Forward SFF-8087 TO SFF-8482  card raid direct to SAS,  add power to the rear of those black connectors.
As you can see owning both cables in your sevice kit allows you to test any drive made.  SAS or SATA.  with power added.  
Nut Shell ! SSF world.
There are 3 classes of backplanes (I will not discuss, sideband cables nor LEDs) nor 2.5" or 3.5" cages, that is your call, that.
2: SAS only
3: SATA only,
Just one glance at the business end of the hot swap side front , if you see those 7 pins in the center, then you know that socket is SAS only or both SAS/SATA.
If you look carefully on the rear that connector on this side, tells you the final answer, if you see 36 pin plugs, that is a dual mode backplane.
Some are not that, but only SATA. (or call you back plane maker and ask him, save all this looking an gandering at the connectors and the printed circuits seen there)  Here is a real  HP dual mode plane.
Now one example of a REVERSE cable  Below: Most folks have no need for this cable, 99% don't  , and is totally use less on SAS  drives, after all SAS drives will not operate off any SATA chips you are using.

The black plane is used, and has SFF8087 36 pin large connector , only on this end, that is what reversed  means , this.
The other end has 4 connectors and plugs in to some MOBO or some controller card for drives.  (SATA cards are common) The word reverse  I think, means that big connector is on the wrong end. (reversed)
The wrong cable is most times THIS ONE: End.

A good service kit is what?  (What I call the PIG box (expendable unlike any high end Server). A cheap PC with X16 express slots handy (or x8) Mine is ASUS M5A78L PC box, my test pig.
The PIG has 1 HBA card inside. SAS rated. (not any kind of SATA chip or the like)
2 good choices work here.
  • LSI-9211 (flasted to HBA only mode) cost is $30? (aka: 3ware cards)
  • A used P420 card,  (HP) with the HBA bit set, F8 mode turn on HBA, or use SSA app.  The card is $100 used, so out of my PIG LEAGUE.
With this setup I can erase all hard drives, be they SAS or SATA.  Using the correct version DBAN 1.07.
The cable must not be REVERSE,  It must be forward normal cables. As seen below:

Blank DBAN v: 1.07 erased used,  HDD , both SAS and SATA. (and tested on another working system for sure with the HBA cards or using P420 HBA mode)
Spare raid cards, and for sure the HBA card, in the kit.(mine is LSI-9211 flashed by me to HBA (raid dead here) this card is 100% passthrough.  
This allows recycling all classes and type of old HDD that are formatted wrong, in any why shape or form, even LSI/DELL/IBM/Apple or Linux formatted.  It then allows me to test my drive using HD-Sentinel.
With that, you can diagnose all drives. The HBA mode also opens the door to S.M.A.R.T data direct viewed even the run time clock !.  see drive parameters directly, like this bad drive  here.
The direct  viewing of this data, is blocked, by a real RAID card. (HP says trust the LED for errors or set up traps with the even logs)

The cables I use  are below.  2, different cables or 1 cable 1st seen and and tiny adaptor for SAS drives.

This simple (HP) adpaptor makes SAS drives work on the cable above. Data on the right, power on the left. HP sells this.

Or use this for direct SAS connections.  (some folks like, 15k SAS drives, for lots of good reasons) lacking a real back plane.
SFF-8482 (and 8087 on the raid card side) as you can see in all cases here, you must add power to the plugs or the drive will be dead.

Jargon H3LL:
HBA , host bus adaptor that sees all drives, all the time. (a card or a chip doing that for say SATA oR SAS)   This mode comes for free in the P420 card, or you can reflash LSI cards to be HBA only or RAID only.
RAID controllers. sorry will not see alien drives, formatted wrong, or with data I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND AT ALL.   Study the manuals on your controller first learn how it really works, you will shocked !
ALien, non HP formats of any kinds, or formats not from Microsoft or from Linux, etc,  (100s of formats wiki that and learn that)
Alien format, like using  HDD formatted with 3WARE RAID, or LSI or DELL or Adaptec.
RAID , "Redundunat Array of InExpensive disks" (Today there are huge and expensive, so the names blur)
Hardware raid, my page.  I will not talk about software raid ever, I don't link it nor it's weakness (can get infected with a virus and take the whole card house down  so easy)
SATA, serial ATA drive, seen on BILLIONS of PC. now. PATA (or IDE) obsolete jnow.
SAS, Serial atached SCSI ( the serial version of old parallel SCSI)
UEFI = HELL,  avoid it like the Plegue, its Religion of GEEK PARANOIA!  If you don't have it?, you are DIRTY DOG and are DOOMED to DIE a horrible Death. (for sure from the  GUY in the MIDDLE )
If not using UEFI expect helpers to treat you like a leper. or worse a child molester?.  (not me , THEM)
RTM = Read the manual,  in the military 1968 we called it RTFM (x-rated beep) or RTMFM (read the meticulously formulated manual) no really, read it, it costs you not a penny. (hint turn off TV and the freak'n CELL)
HDD = hard disk drive but could be SSD, solid state..., yeah. fast.
ROM (read only memory) OR FIRMWARE OR FW=  It is the BOOT Rom or the F8 P410 or other ROMs in the system, best is to keep them up to date on servers,  (on home PC's not so much!)
Boot USB stick (any USB flash memory, aka: Thumb drives, or Udisk or USB key (HP slange)
RAID is not for backup of data! unless you have like 5 off production, backup RAIDs just for that  off site., RAID is only for online reliability, when a drive fails its still going like the energizer bunny.
 (it may run slower, sure)
RAID can be super fast , see mine?SAS 10K 
RAID software can get infected, after all the RAID logic is located in MAIN RAM(and its files) , so RAM corrupts and then trashes your precious data?  (a double wammy effect or 3, boot drive + RAM + data raid)
Just because you have endless fast cores on the SERVER (using Software-Raid), the RAID card (CHIP Hardware) still has advantages! For sure with a 1GB CACHE and battery/CAP. good.!

 Software in Silicon (ROM) does have advantages,  Believe it !  And hot swap !  You do need that if serious.


TO RUN P410 CARD RAID. None of this helped, me get F8 menus, but in my case if you turn off slot 4 the card does go dead, no more P410 boots and scans, now.

Full boot

All attempts by me to get F8 ROM entry menus working failed, directly, at boot to work on any Alien PC failed, and tried many old PCs . SSA is the  cure and is not hard at all to learn and use.
My configuration is, SSD boot on SATA 1 port to windows 10,  The 410 raid card runs my video RAID array,  2x 1GB , Centurion (tm) drives,  In RAID 1 format, (mirror'd) ( I will bench mark it)
The RAID 1 is faster for reads, in fact the HP magic inside does read aheads, but write times are slow some say but I am streaming only no writes, but I have a 1GB CACHE on my P410 so writes can fast (<1gb)  and I set mine to 75% read cache.  Set yours as you want,  and test it with bench mark programs to be sure it works is you want !
The only real CON here is 1+1GB = 1GB,. (but holds over 200 video movies (MKV) plenty for me, for ever....

THE PIG:  (and expendable PC to use, test things and generally torture) Avoid UEFI PIGs, or turn it off if it will let you.
Any PC with a X8 to x16 Express slot works, for a PIG.... find one at Goodwill™ for $20?

Asus M5A78L-m LX plus (circa 2010) , has it;s own BBS F8 hot key  BIOS BOOT SCREEN"  this ASUS feature fights my  RAID card  F8 hot key,(a war of sorts)  (warning  some MOBO's the top slot is  Video card only enabled)
I use my  HBA card with LSI 9211 , in "IT" HBA mode.(flashed to that), above to test drives and erase them.  Flashing done like this is called Crossflashing the card. (and is reversable)
I can boot to any windows PC live CD and test ANY HDD, or  run Linux boot media and run the great Linux Disktest  seen here , and smart scans and bench marks.
The HBA card is great for erasing stubborn HDD of any kind. (used drives mostly)
"I.T" means "initiator target" (or raid target= "IR") that term is LSI™ , but HP/DELL and IBM use LSI cards so.....
 (the P410 is not a  LSI  it is a pure HPs card) HP used LSI on low end servers. wow fish eats fish...  3Ware™ then LSI then < Broadcom > but now Avago Technologies
My RAID LSI-9570 works here too 100%
P410 Tests: (rule 1 use and AUX fan or the card will overheat fast , if not done)  (The 410 F8 key is dead only, but the card works perfectly)
  1. Powercord pulled x2 if 2, then power button pushed to discharge the internal DC power bus. (cap'.s hold charges for a long time) (cap.'s = huge electrolyic capacitors)
  2. Plug in Card P410, with cables and 1 drive, do not run the card with just cables dangling on the end , per HP service bulletin on topic (why? they act as antenna's and blow up the sas RX recievers is why!)
  3. Power on the server and make sure (card edge, #1 of 9 LED) #4 flashes (heartbeat) and #9 is off (controller failure) if these LEDs glow, the card is bad..  The card is dead for sure #4 LED. If the LED8 glows the drive is bad. (RTM p410)??
  4. Then run ACU or SSA, I do both sometimes, SSA is more advanced. (boot to the CD per HPs instructions) P410 CARD
  5. If the card can not be seen in the SSA,  run my sniffer prog. seen below:  
  6. If all goes well you can create and array , delete one or change one as you please.
  7. If a used  drive is acting dead, I then  Erase a stuborn drive, we use Dban Version 1.07 no newer will work.   The problem with this is that you need a HBA card to run DBAN (or Dban finds the card but not the DRIVE behind it)
    (those same vendor/Device ID's show up the same way  in Windows Device manager+ properties+details+hardwared ID's of card (not missing) and pick ID's)
Keep in mind the 410 is has no PASSthrough (the 420 does !) , If you insert a random used HDD with any kind of Alien format on it, the controller can in fact show it as non existing or worse do the wrong thing ! (Imagine an APPLE disk inserted, formatted)
If you even think a disk is Alien (say off Fleabay) ERASE it first! DBAN IT,  some content is illegal  and you don't want that in your home ever. (not in your possesion, for sure...)
The 410 does not do real JBOD modes. (but does RAID 0, a close match)
When I say HBA , it means "non-raid host bus adaptors(or chips)"  Or the P420 was toggled to HBA mode and when this bit is flipped, the 420  RAID features are turned off (see?) But is very useful for testing.
Amazing facts on 410(done by me):
On trick I learned is that my 2 new 1TB drives with 1/2 full of MKV videos , and mirrored using SATA HBA and W10 dynamic arrays, (2 drives)  I then broke the mirror using MS tools and then unplugged one drive, and the connected the first drive to P410.
I did a P410 create drive on it and lost no data at all. (this hint shows the flexiblity here) then I added the 2nd drive to the 410 and the 410 started a sync.  (took 5+ hours but it came on line in due time)
But in all cases if the 410 can not see a drive at all, I DBAN  it using any handy HBA card.. (9211-"IT" is my favorite)

So will Sniffer3 (free) as seen here, (as will my Windows, 7 PE Live Boot CD.(or usb stick boot same) One P410 I have fails to show boot , initialize screens and all the below (arrows) are missing (a dead card it is)

The P410  is a very intelligent RAID controller, and even more so if you flash upgrade the firmware on it. (do so first )  The manuals at HP cover all these facts, it's better to read that first.
It will even auto format a new blank drive if only it is attached (day 1 event) and quote the guide !
"The number of drives connected to the controller determines the RAID level that is autoconfigured when the server powers up. For more information, see the server -specific user guide or the HP ROM-Based Setup Utility User Guide"
The rules for replacing,moving and adding drives, is covered in the manual, it is best to read that manual in all cased, doing all steps skipping none. Including flashing the P410 to the most newest FIRMWARE !
Keep in mind the intelligence there even tells you about  any marginal drive there, and to get it the heck out now. (this is where it excels ) (yes drives come on 3 flavors, good/bad (dead) and weak.
A drive that does not spin is bad and for sure the Drives PnP response will be missing (shows as no drive present) The PnP responses are located on spare tracks (cylinders) and if that is dead, so be the drive, for any reasons what so ever.
(heard to spin or felt, hold it in your  hand on a split cable, feel the centrifugal forces as you twist your hand (a physics thing),? good, if not , it is not spinning and is DEAD) Some drives spin for 5 min and then stall. (have 2 here doing that now)

It will see you pull a dead drive and put in a new empty drive and will then SYNC it.
It will let you add new drives (Expand mode) for bigger or faster arrays  and rebuild stripe sets.
It will even (don't try it) correct a complex ARRAY set , removed and put back in in the wrong order,  It will try hard, but next time label your drives, correctly, never  ever do this on purpose.
The key here is to not try to confuse the P410.  Do things 1 step at a time and let the cards processes finish before doing step2.  (reSYNC or expand modes running do not interupt those processes, as SSA tells you it is still expanding.)
If you want to use P410 and only one drive, do a create drive, and LUN as RAID0 , that works ever time, (also having a 1GB CACHE card inserted is always better ,  and if missing?, features end or run at a snails pace)
The P410 F8 key is dead, but works perfectly.(with the ACU.SSA config disk and under the OS as an App (SSA).
If you want to boot that drive set the first LUN  to boot. (using SSA)
Learn to read the manual at any drive failures , the path to corrective actions vary by RAID class, RAID 0 is not Raid 50/ 6 or / 60.
Learn that there are card LED to view and each HDD has 2 LED to read, before , making any decisions.  Do not pull drives with LEDs tell you it is rebuilding, DO NOT.
Rebuild times can be as slow as 200 GB/hour.  So 1TB of data? 5hours with  largest CACHE option.
The card also supports migration mode, say a brick fell on your, Proliant motherboard, and was wrecked, even old early generation, you can in fact move all the drives to a same system or newer.
My last hint is to not read old posts or old links on this RAID card, things changed, and we have newer manuals, and newer software and new firmware with all features now turned on for FREE !

DBAN (how to erase a stubborn SAS drive or any drive for that matter. Only this version 1.0.7 works , newer versions can't find HP Raid cards (how said is that?) finds this drive attached to my P410
We use Dban Version 1.07
Takes 13 minutes to erase 68 gig SAS drive. using quick Erase mode.
I am booted to the Dban CD here, I hit Enter , then select the whole drive , then M key and QUICK ERASE (0s), see wipe?, then press F10 and it is now and empth drive.
If the drive is very hard to erase we connect it to my HBA controller (9211-LSI) and Dban it that way. (with alien formats, this can happen) (PRNG = erase rules or algorithmic patterens)
